This is a very important week for women. From March 7 to March 13 we are celebrating International Women's Week. The celebration used to last a day but now it lasts a week . Canada's theme for 2010 is STRONG WOMEN, STRONG CANADA, STRONG WORLD. Among other things, it was reported in the media that 61% of university graduates are women compared to 55% in 1998 and that women were opening their own businesses at twice the rate of men (I guess no one wants to hire us).
The global day was March 8. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria IWD was a national holiday. Next year it will be the centenary as the first year was run in 1911. I found pictures and beautiful artwork depicting this event:
This poster was created in Cuba.
This one is Russian.
This took place in Indonesia.
South Africa.
There was a big assembly in Turkey
An overseas friend (male) of mine sent me this article that shows how his part of the world is involved in empowering women by implementing a new safety program:
With the high rate of attacks on women in secluded car parks, especially during evening hours, the Cardiff City Council has established a "Women Only" car park at the new St David’s Shopping Centre. Even the attendants are exclusively female so that a comfortable and safe environment is created for patrons.
Below is the first picture available of this world-first, women-only car park in Wales.
I'm not "sure" if he is still a friend.... Anyhow.....
Did anything happen in your part of the blogosphere on March 8th?
P.S. Cant wait to celebrate another tea party next Wednesday with Wanda Lee.
